Here we go. The team at PAPA (Pro Amatuer Pinball Association) is looking to bring live pinball to your nearest browser or television streaming box. With pledges reaching nearly half of the $20,000 goal in the first day of the campaign it's safe to say that we will have a new and unique way to discover and enjoy pinball competition. PAPA TV will broadcast live coverage of pinball tournaments with the professional quality of other sports, including multiple camera angles, live commentary, and interviews. With PAPA TV, we will create a highly visible and entertaining production, bringing pinball to a new and substantial audience worldwide. What is PAPA? PAPA is the Professional and Amateur Pinball Association. Founded by Steve Epstein, owner of the famous Broadway Arcade in New York, PAPA started hosting World Championships in 1991, attracting players from around the world with big prize pools and media attention. PAPA Champions have appeared on the Today Show, ESPN SportsCenter, and Late Night with David Letterman. Sadly, the Broadway Arcade lost its lease, and the tournaments were suspended after 1997, until PAPA came under new management and relaunched in 2004 at its current location. Update - the funding goal has been reached on the first day of the campaign! "If ever there was a funky white boy...," Manely said with a smile. Since 2006, Manely has been working hard remodeling a former Sunoco gas station and filling it with more than 50 classic arcade games and pinball machines from the past few decades. Manely instructs people driving along state Route 21 into Navarre, "when you smell bread, turn your head." The unassuming renovated building now is Flashback Classic Coin-Ops and it's open for parties and fundraisers, and just friends and family getting together. "It's all about having fun, and it's all about celebrating life," Manely said. "That's what it's really about." Manely's favorite part is when he watches a baby boomer such as himself lift a young child up on one of the footstools he has handy throughout the business to play games together. Or when he sees a parent and child sitting on stools side by side playing "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", or racing each other on "Suzuka 8 Hours." He has just as much fun seeing grandparents and parents reliving their youth, as the children who are discovering these classic games for the first time. "When you see that magic, it's just priceless," Manely said. But first, like a museum curator giving a tour, Manely has to share a few stories about the dozens upon dozens of record albums that decorate the walls of the Flashback lobby. "This is the best part ... I get to share my stories with people," he said. If you haven't been to the Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda, here's another reason: Owner Michael Schiess has built a pinball machine based on the "bean machine." Inventor Sir Francis Galton used it to demonstrates the central limit theorem. The machine has a vertical board with interleaved rows of pins, and balls are dropped from the top. They bounce left and right, and eventually, they are collected into the bins at the bottom, which demonstrates that the normal distribution is approximate to the binomial distribution. If that last sentence was hard to fully comprehend on paper, you're not alone. Schiess uses the machine make math easier to understand, not to mention more exciting. for local school children. You recently built a Galton Board Pinball Machine. You took inspiration from Galton, but designed it yourself. Did you have any help? It was built by brother Christian Schiess and myself in our shop. “It's kind of a unique thing,” said Dan Nikolich, owner and co-founder of the Showdown. “We have over 125 pinball machines and classic arcade games on free play. You pay your admission to get in and can play to your heart's content. “We have kids who can barely reach the flippers and need to pull up a stool to grandparents in their 80s who remember playing.” In addition to the pinball and arcade games, the event includes movie screenings, a classic car show, tournaments for all ages and skill levels and exhibitors buying and selling pinball machines, classic arcade games and parts. “We'll have exhibitors that are selling games and parts and a lot of new technology,” Nikolich said. “At one point, there was only one company that was left, and there's this great resurgence in the past few years where interest has gone way up.” Read more via Summit Daily The good folks over at Jersey Jack Pinball have release another update regarding the progress of not only the Wizard of Oz pinball but also give us an update on their upcoming game The Hobbit.

Head on over to the Resto Tips section and take a look. With Stern Pinball's news of the release last week for the complete line of Metallica pinball machines going on sale, the internet blew up while ordering insanity ensued as people tried to get their hands on a Metallica pin of their own. With a last minute 100 unit bump on the Master of Puppets limited edition (LE) games to help fill demand distributors could not keep up with orders which left many people scrambling to find the LE model wherever they could dig one up. A little less than half of the limited edition games were destined to go overseas which left many US buyers out in the cold if they wanted the top-of-the-line model.
Fortunately for those who did not get a limited edition model, Stern will be manufacturing a Premium model with the same features as the LE but with different "road case" artwork. Now, as it appears due to heavy demand and an affinity by many collectors for the hand-drawn art, Stern has announced the addition of a second Premium model. The new version will include artwork more closely aligned with the Pro and LE models which feature hand drawn artwork by Metallica artist, Dirty Donny Gillies. Stern has also enjoyed world wide exposure on mainstream media websites such as WSJ regarding the game which has helped generate awareness about the game and pinball in general. With “Pinball at the Zoo” only a day away, it is seems time to revisit the popular emulators that allow anyone to relive the magic of the steel ball from the comfort of home. The two rivals for your micropayments are “Zen Pinball” and “Pinball Arcade.” Each offers different strengths, but nothing will replicate the feeling of playing pinball in person.
“Zen Pinball” and “Pinball Arcade” are available to download on most smartphones, tablets, computers and some consoles. On some of these formats, the front-end loader is free and they offer one free pinball table to play. The real fun comes when you buy the licensed tables that range from the humorous “Plants Vs. Zombies” to a classic like “The Machine: Bride of Pinbot.” “Zen Pinball” and its console equivalents, “Zen Pinball 2” and “Pinball Fx2,” pride themselves on comic book themes or science fiction. Fans of the Marvel universe have a lot of games to choose from. Read more via battlecreekenquirer |
