Guitarist Brian Setzer and his wife, Julie Reiten, felt right at home in their aptly named Rock Island Lofts. Setzer would have friends over and “rock the heck” out of the top-floor unit. He even posed with his signature Gretsch guitar in front of the downtown Minneapolis skyline on his rooftop patio for the cover of his 2009 album, “Songs From Lonely Avenue.”
“We leave the curtains open in the living room,” he said during a phone interview while on tour with the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s Christmas show, which included a gig last month at the Orpheum Theatre. “It’s the prettiest nightlight you could have.” But after eight years there, Setzer and Reiten are selling their condo in the North Loop neighborhood, which is within walking distance of restaurants, nightlife haunts and Target Field. They’re moving to a western suburb where Reiten will have a yard for gardening and space for an art studio — and Setzer will have a three-car garage. “My hobby is working on hot rods and motorcycles,” he said. They know that all that pinball experience needs to be perfect is background music that overpowers those obnoxious pinball sound effects. So they've brought in hits from rock bands both new and old to provide the soundtrack for Pinball Rocks HD, an experience Sony's pitching as the loudest pinball game ever. It's well-rated on iTunes, but now that it's available on Android, it's really ready torock. This free rock club is jammed with content, with over twenty missions and three bonus games. The pinball machines are a thing of a beauty, with some ranging from the usual velvet and neon affairs to toxic wastelands and rundown barren streets. But at the end of the day, it's all about the music. A new song plays whenever you crank out another ball. Some of the machines pay due respect to some of the performers.
Bands include the likes of AC/DC, Alice in Chains, Three Days Grace, The Sword, Norma Jean, Anvil, Bullet For My Valentine, Slayer, and many more. There are in-app purchases within the app where you can purchase tracks and download them into your music library, along with the option to acquire cheats to enhance gameplay. These things aside, this experience is available for free. The first high Quality video of the new Metallica Limited Edition pinball machine in the wild has surfaced courtesy of Pinside member MnHotRod. The new video highlights features of the LE model including the moving cross, hammer of justice, coffin ball lock mechanism, controlled led lighting and more. The video is 10 minutes plus in length so be sure to make some time to watch it. Unfortunately the sound is rather lack-luster so we still do not get the full experience the the game but more footage is sure to start rolling in soon as customers start to take delivery of their games. Stern Pinball has uploaded a fresh video of in-house programmer and software development manager Lyman Sheets playing the new Metallica Premium which details some of the extra hardware in the higher tier games. The game is reported to be incomplete software-wise so it's best not to take everything you see here as fully baked gameplay. Either way it's a nice way to get to know the game played by one of the best pinball players in the world. If you love rock and metal and if the idea of playing a game of pinball gets you a bit misty-eyed for the past, you'll be glad to know that Sony Music's upcoming Pinball Rockscombines those into one rockin' game. The iOS app, developed by Game Prom, features tables inspired by rock legends and their music. Gamers can play on pinball tables inspired by Alice in Chains, Bullet for My Valentine, AC/DC and Slayer. Each table is crafted to pay homage to the respective band's music. When the game launches June 13, fans can play along with tracks by Chevelle, The Sword, Filter, Red, All That Remains, Hatebreed and Nonpoint. Fans also can purchase songs from the app through iTunes. Pinball Rocks is meant to bring fans of rock music and gamers together and maybe introduce music fans to a new way to listen to songs, a Sony executive told Mashable. It will also bring exposure to a slew of rock artists as fans play along with their tracks. The Alice in Chains, Bullet for My Valentine, AC/DC and Slayer tables are all premium and will cost $2.99 each to download. Sony said these tables are packed with Easter eggs for fans of those bands and nods to the bands' history. Alice in Chains' table, for instance, has a bonus game that unlocks the band's new single "Hollow." The Slayer and AC/DC pinball games are already in the iTunes store, but Pinball Rocks brings all those games under one roof. Sony said there will be new premium tables for other rock artists in the future. You can watch the trailer for the Alice in Chains table below. Rarely (ok, never) do we get to see 80s synth pop, pinball and B-movie cannibalism championed in the same music video. Then again, maybe its something we should just learn to expect from Hott MT, the loveable bunch of LA/OC weirdos who stormed Wayne Coynes house to give him a present and wound up making a song and a video with him. Now, they've taken the echo-laden dreaminess of their song "YKWYR" up a few notches with a new video, premiering today on Heard Mentality.
It starts out normal enough, as the band crowds around a blinking pinball machine somehow possessed by the floating purple aura of vocalist Ashleigh Allard. A minute or so into the video, the band are inexplicably glass jars of pickles and weird looking preserves. That's kinda where it starts getting gross. We won't spoil the entire thing for you, let's just say that if you're somehow of fan of both Holy Mountain and Redneck Zombies, then the ending of this video is exactly what you wanted to see right before lunch today. This month, in addition to the recent release of their debut album I Made This, the band is also hosting a Monday night residency at the Echo. Maybe stand a few feet back from the stage just in case they decide to do a live reenactment of this video. Check out the video on the ocweekly webpage here blogs.ocweekly.com |
